Halloween Safety Tips
The major dangers are not from ghosts and goblins - but from falls and pedestrian/car accidents. Follow these tips for a safe and happy Halloween!
Costumes
- Choose costumes that are made of flame-retardant materials.
- Costumes should be light, bright, and clearly visible to motorists.
- Use strips of reflective tape to help make children visible.
- Remove masks or any item that limits eyesight before crossing a street, driveway, or alley.
- Avoid tripping by making sure costumes don't drag the ground.
Trick or Treating
- Never trick or treat alone. Go with an adult.
- Only go to homes with a porch light on.
- If no sidewalk is available, walk at the farthest edge of the roadway facing traffic.
- Stay in familiar neighborhoods.
- Do not enter homes or apartments without adult supervision.
- Don't pet animals you do not know.
- Walk - do not run - from house to house. Don't cross yards or lawns where unseen objects or uneven terrain can present tripping hazards.
- Carry flashlights to help children see better and be seen more clearly.
- Older children should carry a cell phone to call home if necessary.
- Look in all directions before crossing the street.
- Use reflective tape on candy bags to be more visible to motorists.
Motorists
- Avoid traveling on Halloween evening. If you must drive, please drive slowly, carefully, and watch for children.
- Enter and exit driveways with extreme caution.
Tips for Adults
- Pin a piece of paper to your child's clothing that includes their name, address, and phone number in case they become separated from the group.
- Older children should know where and how to reach you and when they are expected to be home.
- When expecting trick-or-treaters, remove anything that could be an obstacle from lawns, steps and porches.
- Keep pumpkins and hot electric lamps away from drapes, decorations, flammable materials or areas where children will be standing or walking.
- Don't overload electrical outlets with lighting or special effects.
- If you notice any suspicious or unlawful activity contact law enforcement immediately.
- Adult partygoers should establish a designated driver.
Remember to inspect candy before it is eaten. When in doubt, throw it out!
