The Intern program is designed to give students that are involved in a college Fire Science degree program the necessary skills to become familiar with fire department procedures and the tools needed to become marketable in the fire service. Clark-Cowlitz Fire Rescue currently has an agreement with Portland Community College. CCFR accepts students willing to make the maximum term commitment to the program as outlined by each individual school.

This allows the intern to fulfill fire science electives that would normally be taken in a classroom and gives the student that needed education and experience to be a successful firefighter. Interns work as firefighters under the direction of an assigned company officer and respond to emergency medical calls, fires and other 911 emergencies. They also get education and experience in relation to station duties, vehicle and tool maintenance as well as mentoring for current classes and preparatory skills needed for employment opportunities.
